Welcome to the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women

Lawyers Association

Greetings GSCBWLA Family,

As we close another Black History Month, I think of how short the month of February is! It is important that the discussion of Black History and the celebration of the accomplishments of people of color continue every month. I recently discussed this in the Miami Herald, especially with the backdrop of elected officials donning blackface in the past, the Brickell incident, and the Cohen hearings.

March is Women's History Month.  It is the perfect month to begin the discussion on intersectionality -- how race and gender create different as well as unique challenges.  It is time to ask -- what am I doing to assure pay equity for women, especially women of color, in my firm or business? What can I do to make sure that all voices are heard in the room -- and that people who are impacted by decisions have an active seat at the table? It is more than having diversity. It is said "diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance"

This month, we are very excited for our 4th Fancy Hats and Brilliant Bowties event at Gulfstream Park.  It will be held Sunday, March 17 from 12-4pm.  This is a party with a purpose -- a portion of the proceeds will fund the GSCBWLA Fellow at Legal Services of Greater Miami.  Please buy your tickets today! We are looking forward to participating with FAWL at Lobby Day in Tallahassee on March 11.  Additionally, stay tuned for some exciting webinars that we have in the works.

In solidarity,

Melba V. Pearson, Esq.
