Welcome to the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women
It is my honor and privilege to take the reigns of our beloved GSCBWLA for 2018-2019.
In doing so, I am aware of the tremendous effort it took to get to where I am at this moment. Not by me--but by the incredible sisters upon whose shoulders I stand.
From our namesake to today, our organization is the hub for black firsts. Being the first makes you a target. It makes you the one who can open the door for others, or forever more slam the door shut. It is an awesome responsibility which can be burdensome at times.
As I reflect upon the challenges we face as women of color, as attorneys and as a nation, I take comfort in the fact that while these hurdles are new to us, higher hurdles were demolished by those who came before us. Our foremothers gave us the strength to endure, overcome and succeed.
But sometimes we need a reminder of who we are, and the resiliency that lies within. GSCBWLA is the place to be refreshed for the continuing battles ahead.
This begins at our FWLOC summit on August 24-26, 2018 in Ft. Lauderdale.
It continues with our membership meetings, and the exciting programs on deck for this year.
I look forward to meeting and to be fellowship with each of you over the next year. Please do not hesitate to reach out with your ideas, comments or concerns. Let’s learn and grow together.
Let’s support the superwomen — those who have blazed the trail, those who fight the good fight today, and those who are following our lead.
I leave you with a quote from Coretta Scott King: Struggle is a never ending process. Freedom is never really won, you earn it, and win it in every generation.
